See Guy Saville's interesting post on the origins of The Afrika Reich: http://guysavillewriter.blogspot.com/2011/07/is-for-apocalypse-now.html.

The idea you need is often in your head; all you have to do is access it/recognize it. I was thrilled when I came up with the title Remix at the last moment. Only later I came across the title Rock Remix on one of my early lists. All I had to do was shorten it, but I'd passed over it instead.Lexihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14404818053292364819noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6250078125607062288.post-41286345013175734522011-08-03T14:20:27.275+01:002011-08-03T14:20:27.275+01:00John seems to be saying that the stories he writes...John seems to be saying that the stories he writes often have their origins in forgotten memories and the writing process brings those memories back to the surface.

I'm sure that every writer will draw on their own store of knowledge, to minimise the often tedious 'research' process. But is the germ of most stories really present in memories, either forgotten or remembered?

Surely the creativity also generated in the subconscious can create stories out of nothing. The stories may mix in elements of personal experience but I would expect something unexpected and original to emerge.

When Lexi is pondering in her bath, I think that she is creating food for her subconscious to work on. Then after the mystical 'mixing' an idea will emerge into the conscious mind and Bingo, Remix is born!

Or have I got this all wrong..... Has been known! *grin*Quantumhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08686409685564115213noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6250078125607062288.post-15222887255667348442011-07-31T17:14:16.666+01:002011-07-31T17:14:16.666+01:00FH, I suspect all writers are surprised when they ...FH, I suspect all writers are surprised when they have a sudden revelation that some incident or character came from their past. Books for the very young were better in her day (though we scorned board books and books with noises and tapes) but there was less competition for attention in mine. The offspring didn't watch much television, and we didn't have a computer until she was fifteen. I realized the other day, if anything her attention span is too long...

We are so lucky to have that instant escape to other worlds so readily to hand.Lexihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14404818053292364819noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6250078125607062288.post-54008997969796711842011-07-30T13:16:10.271+01:002011-07-30T13:16:10.271+01:00Thank you lovely Lexi for a wonderful guest post f...Thank you lovely Lexi for a wonderful guest post from John Harding. I love how he discovered the excitement of reading and touching books to then unconsciously reconnect with this emotionally charged memory while writing his book.

Writing a story is so complex! :-)

Take care
xOld Kittyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13185547869183611159noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6250078125607062288.post-19394215877196611472011-07-30T12:55:11.168+01:002011-07-30T12:55:11.168+01:00What a lovely post.
