Unofficial Girl, the cover...

I've rethought the cover for Unofficial Girl, dragooning the offspring into posing for me. She's a few years younger than Beth, my heroine, a little thinner, and has the WRONG HAIR. Beth's is long, curly and red/gold. As you can see from Remix's cover, the daughter's is long, blonde, straight as rain, and wants to stay that way.

So I spent an hour with curling tongs, hair grips and a lot of extra-strength hair lacquer, and you can see the results in the new cover. I changed the colour on Adobe Photoshop.

All my future heroines will have whatever hairstyle my daughter has at the time, I've decided.

  2. Minty will soon be eclipsing her mum in popularity. I see a film career in her future playing the heroines in your novels.

Great work, as usual. You are what I aspire to become. Really.

  3. Kitty, the offspring is genetically fortunate. She got the best of both parents, lucky her.

Alan, you don't want to become me. The money's terrible :o)

  4. But the work ethic that will inevitably win out is definitely worth emulating.

  5. Perhaps a modeling career for your daughter? When she becomes rich, I have two eligible sons. Both handsome as all get out.

I second that. Though if the guys at Hollywood aren't very smart, the science community would welcome her with open arms!

Lexi, did you use a mirror to generate that image?

  7. Q, no, I flipped the photo once I'd tweaked it. I am very slowly learning how to use the vast potential of Adobe Photoshop.

My covers in five years' time will be awesome :o)

  8. That's wonderful! Your daughter is beautiful and you are so talented! It's a very effective book cover and I can't wait to read the book.

  9. Excuse me while I bask smugly for a moment...

That was nice. Back to normal now.

  10. Am impressed with your skills at both Photoshopping and hairstyling, and the strapline is nicely intriguing too!
If I'm allowed one tiny grumble: I'm just not that sold on the title. Perhaps after reading the book it'll feel right to me?

Wishing you lots of luck with it anyway.

  11. Agh, the title, always a nightmare. So difficult. The runner-up was Hard Copy - still don't know if that's better. All the obvious ones, like Double Cross, have been taken.

  12. It was a pathetic non-Kindler's joke when I said I preferred 'Hard Copy' before, but the truth is, I do. I think it's the word 'Girl' that's bothering me...

  13. I rather like the title "Unofficial Girl". I find it intriguing. How can you be a girl unofficially?

  14. K, do you mean that we are all women now? Unofficial Woman doesn't have a ring to it...

Thanks, FH - I'm not sure, but can't think of anything I prefer. Remix came to me at the very last minute.

  15. I just think 'girl' sounds a bit chick-lit as well as implying Beth might be quite young. Completely agree that 'Unofficial Woman' sounds odd though! 'Hard Copy' has the 'Remix' sort of vibe, but maybe you don't want to link the books too closely?

  16. There's also the nuances of the title; hard in the sense of 'difficult' is okay, but hard meaning 'tough' is misleading.
